Generative AI, Teaching, and Research
Helping educators and scholars understand the implications of Generative AI on teaching and research
Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, I’ve been working to help educators and researchers wrestle with what this new era of generative AI means for teaching, research, and higher education. As part of these efforts, I’ve participated in summer working groups, co-organized panels and workshops, and developed guidance and sample syllabus policies for faculty. Starting in Spring 2026, I am also serving as one of the inaugural AI Faculty Fellows for the Office of the Provost.
Here is some of my ongoing work:
- Reflections on using generative AI for a historical research project (March 2026).
- Synthesizing recent developments in AI during 2025 and implications for historians (December 2025).
- Testing out how effectively a Custom GPT can grade student essays (May 2024).
- Some of my big-picture throughts on Generative AI and teaching (March 2024).
- Guidance for faculty on three approaches Generative AI in their classes
